| | | | π Kia ora <<First Name>> π June has been a month of deep reflection, bold transitions, and powerful homecomings. After wrapping up my Fulbright Scholar journey in the United States, I returned to Aotearoa with a renewed sense of purpose - and a full heart. Just last week, I found myself moving from high-stakes conversations about DEI across U.S. institutions to being named a finalist in the DEI category at the Women in ICT Awards (WIICTA) in Auckland. What a difference a hemisphere makes. In the U.S., this work often feels like advocacy for permission. But here at home, it felt like celebrationβwhere inclusion is a priority, not a problem, and where belonging is the foundation, not the finish line. This month also marked an important milestone for Aotearoaβs research community: the Royal Society Te ApΔrangi released best-practice guidelines for the use of Generative AI in research, with insights from an incredible advisory group I was proud to be part of. These guidelines - available in both te reo MΔori and English - support researchers across universities, wΔnanga, CRIs, and independent institutions to embrace AI ethically and inclusively. And now, Iβm thrilled to be reconnecting with our She Sharp community as we gear up for our next event on 30 July at HPE βTHRIVE: Your Career, Your Storyβ. On June 9, at WWDC 2025, Apple introduced a new interface design called Liquid Glass, now implemented across iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe, watchOS 26, and visionOS 26. The company also announced Apple Intelligence, a set of on-device AI features including real-time call translation, image recognition, and personalized recommendations. Platform updates included macOS-style multitasking for iPad, AI-powered Spotlight search on macOS, and spatial widgets for Vision Pro. On June 17, 2025, at Y Combinatorβs AI Startup School in San Francisco, Andrej Karpathy delivered a keynote that sparked major discussion across the tech world. In his talk, he introduced the concept of Software 3.0, a new era where natural language becomes the primary interface for programming and powerful AI models do the rest. Drawing on his experience at Stanford, OpenAI, and Tesla, Karpathy explained that this shift isnβt just about using new toolsβitβs about a fundamental rethinking of software itself. Instead of traditional code, weβre now building systems that understand intent, adapt in real time, and collaborate with humans. In his view, weβre not just writing code differentlyβweβre building an entirely new kind of computer. Source. π New Zealandβs latest unicorn: Halter raises USβ―$100β―million
Auckland-based agβtech innovator Halter has achieved unicorn status after securing a USβ―$100β―million Seriesβ―D round, valuing the company at $1β―billion.The dairy sector has emerged as a bright spot this year in an otherwise dour funding environment for agriculture tech startups as farmers rely more on automation to improve productivity. Halter is tapping into that demand with its system of smart collars, connectivity towers and a mobile app that lets ranchers virtually fence, move and monitor their cattle using sound and vibration cues - promising better grazing efficiency and lower environmental impact. Halter said it plans to use the new funds to expand in the U.S., where the company has been working with about 150 ranchers in 18 states. Source.
